A sports mouthguard requires enough final material thickness to provide protection without becoming excessively bulky. Because thermoforming thins the sheet, the starting material is substantially thicker than that used for retainers or aligners. Multilayer mouthguard products such as Playsafe are designed with protective starting thicknesses that take the forming process into account.
