As a thermoplastic reaches its forming range it softens and loses stiffness. Gravity then pulls the centre of the sheet downward, producing visible sag. The amount of sag varies with polymer type, thickness and temperature. Sag alone should not be used as a universal forming indicator because different materials behave differently when heated.
