Retainer lifespan varies substantially. It depends on material thickness, grinding or clenching, cleaning habits, frequency of wear, insertion and removal technique and the patient’s occlusion. Some retainers need replacement because of cracking or wear, while others are replaced because tooth position has changed. Regular inspection is more useful than relying on a fixed replacement interval.
