What is the difference between hard and soft thermoforming material?

Hard thermoforming materials provide greater rigidity, shape stability and the ability to maintain a defined occlusal surface. Soft materials provide flexibility, cushioning and easier engagement of undercuts. Some appliances benefit from a multilayer hard/soft material that combines both properties. Material selection should reflect the clinical objective, required retention, comfort and expected wear.
